VSAS VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Verona Street Animal Society, the not-for-profit friends’ corporation supporting Rochester Animal Services, is seeking a self-motivated, organized, and passionate Volunteer Coordinator with animal shelter experience. In this position, you will contribute to the growth of the organization by continuing to elevate our already established volunteer program, collaborate with individuals within the organization and play a central role in shelter operations by recruiting, training, and retaining our volunteer base. To thrive in this role you will work independently while having strong communication skills and be an organized, forward-thinker with creative problem solving skills. 

This individual is part of the Animal Services Leadership Team. In that regard, we are looking for someone with a positive, can-do attitude who can continue to cultivate a synergistic relationship between staff and volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator is integral to ensuring consistent high-quality care is delivered to the animals, helping to elevate their experience and outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the management and implementation of all aspects of the volunteer program, including but not limited to:
    • recruit and train new volunteers 
    • monitor and report on the performance of the program
    • implement recognition activities 
  • Develop new volunteer roles as needed, along with the associated training protocols 
  • Revise existing volunteer job descriptions as needed 
  • Research and implement best practices for effective volunteer recruitment and retention 
  • Attend daily shelter staff meeting, weekly managers meeting, bi-weekly meeting with VSAS and Shelter Director, BOD meetings as requested
  • Revise and maintain volunteer code of conduct, handbook, guidelines and foster care handbook
  • Manage conflicts effectively, with compassion and professionalism

This position requires some weekend and evening hours; works independently much of the time but has regular interaction with Animal Services management and staff, VSAS Executive Director, and BOD. 

Knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Detail-oriented and resourceful
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintaining energy through often-times repetitive tasks
  • Ability to keep information confidential 

Minimum Requirements:

I. A Bachelor’s Degree PLUS one (1) year experience in volunteer program management and/or animal welfare experience or other related field, which includes program coordination, recruitment, placement and supervision of personnel (OR) an Associate’s Degree PLUS three (3) years’ experience as described in I. above.

Position details: Part-time, flex schedule (32 hours/wk; $22-26/hr), 64 hours PTO, employer contributes 70% to healthcare
